The objective of the Smart Cities Mission is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure and give a decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment, and application of 'Smart' Solutions. The focus is on sustainable and inclusive development, and the idea is to look at compact areas, create a replicable model for other cities. Nearly 31% of India's current population live in urban areas, and contribute 63% of India's GDP (Census 2011). Urban areas are expected to house 40% of India's population and contribute 75% of India's GDP by 2030. This requires comprehensive development of physical, institutional, social and economic infrastructure. All are important in improving the quality of life and attracting people and investment, setting in motion a virtuous cycle of growth and development. Development of Smart Cities is a step in that direction. Smart Cities tap a range of approaches - digital and information technologies, urban planning best practices, public-private partnerships, and policy change - to make a difference.

1400-1515 hrs Urban Planning to Enable Smart Cities

Land use and urban planning influence our daily lives in many critical ways, determining from the miles we must travel to reach our workplaces, to our city's air quality. The concept of Smart Cities has emerged as a new requirement which involves conceptual principles and practices as applied to land-use and urban planning. City after city is discovering that it pays to reform land use planning. Today, it is commonplace to find the terms “sustainable city” and “sustainable urban development” cited to denote intentions and paragons of political utopia and of land-use and urban planning practices considered to be innovative. In spite of this, the question can be raised of whether sustainable development will be a factor in renewing land-use planning and if so, under which conditions. Can sustainable development help revitalize planning practices? Can sustainable development be used as a basis for revising urban and metropolitan planning? Have specialists in the field of land-use and urban planning re-examined their practices in light of sustainable development principles? What is the real scope of the urban sustainable development approach at each of the spatial scales (metropolitan, regional, medium-size cities, etc.)?

“It is our collective responsibility to act in any way possible to reduce the consequences of Climate Change, conserve resources and maximize efficiency savings.” – Dorah Modise In the recent past India has experienced a significant growth in the building sector and construction is one of the largest economic activities in the country today. The sector is growing and presenting the various opportunities for stakeholders – architects, builders, developers, manufacturers and others, it is time to preserve the environment throwing plethora of challenges. Green Building is the practice of increasing the efficiency with which buildings and their sites use energy, water, and materials, and of reducing impacts on human health and the environment for the entire lifecycle of a building. Green-building concepts extend beyond the walls of buildings and include site planning, community and land-use planning issues as well.

The vision of Digital India is to transform the country into a digitally empowered society and knowledge economy. Governments and citizens are overwhelmingly adopting digital means to ignite and sustain this empowerment. A smart city is designed to optimize residents’ quality of life by leveraging technology and integrating several essential functions like managing citizens data, intelligent transportation, security, digital money, digital lockers, government services, etc. By featuring state of the art technologies (ICT implementations), it is possible to achieve the sustainable, digitally equipped and secured model of smart city.

1145 -1315 hrs IoT Connecting the Smart Cities Ecosystem

The application of Internet of Things (IoT) is spectacularly altering our lives and leaving an insightful impact on our lives, businesses, operations, optimisations, etc. Smart city projects require expertise that spans many different fields including finance, planning , transport, energy, safety, health, telecommunications, etc. The IoT concept is a holistic and layered framework that addresses the needs of multiple aspects of smart city projects and allows cities to use urban data to boost economic competitiveness, and to build more effective, workable solutions to many city challenges. We need to create an effective common network infrastructure, a B15:B17 secure IoT architecture, and layers of control and management that serve the needs of a Smart City and its citizens.

Smart cities are more than just technology. It is about raising the standard of living for all citizens and citizen safety is paramount . In fact, without citizen safety, a smart city does not matter. People must feel safe, secure and the quality of life must be preserved for a person to be able to enjoy the benefits of technology in a smart city. Safe city covers digital security, health security, infrastructure security and personal security. With the economy growing, man-made risks are also growing. The spread of CCTVs and webcams around cities, technologies such as artificial intelligence and data analytics can greatly enhance the capabilities of law enforcement agencies to combat urban crime and terrorism.

With increasing populations, changing policy requirements, new sustainability and recycling goals, and improved technology, municipalities across the globe are joining the “smart cities” movement to become more efficient in managing solid waste. Smart Cities improve operational performance in many sectors, including waste management. Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan aims to teach citizens to reduce and even clean their own waste. But the big question still remains, how far have we come? Landfills, waste segregation and recycle of waste are major problems in solid waste management that we need to address.

1000-1130 hrs Affordable Housing: A Necessity for India

Affordable housing is a new wave sweeping India’s real estate sector. Looking at urbanisation as an opportunity rather than a challenge, the “Housing for All” mission aims to ensure that by the time the nation completes 75 years of its Independence, every family will have a pucca house with basic amenities. The ground-breaking, affordable housing initiative backing this promise, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), plans to provide homes to 18 million households in urban India and nearly 30 million households in rural India. However, there is a unique set of challenges that need to be overcome i.e. how do we build millions of new houses when land is scarce, unacknowledged bottleneck of property records, one crore vacant houses do not enter the rental market, etc.

The real estate and construction sector is an engine of economic growth for India as its contribution to the Indian economy is third highest. Currently, India’s real estate and construction sector is going through a transformative phase; backed by missions such as Housing for All, AMRUT and Smart Cities. Efficient approval processes, simplified taxation (Goods and Services Tax), institutional capacity building, and introduction of urban planning and real estate-related reforms (e.g., RERA and Real Estate Investment Trusts) are playing a major role in streamlining the growth of the real estate sector. With these policy reforms, higher accountability and transparency are expected, and the efficiency of the sector will also improve.

Smart Cities India Awards is an annual event designed to felicitate, recognize and encourage individuals, policy makers, companies, government bodies and associations working behind the successful execution of the mammoth dream of developing 100 smart cities and rejuvenation of 500 cities in India. With its 3rd iteration, the award recognizes pioneering projects that aim to make cities more liveable, sustainable and economically viable by honouring best practices and models in the smart cities concept. The objective is to foster development of future cities enhancing quality of life, innovation, competitiveness and efficient management.
